1 jar (16 ounces) caramel sauce
Toppings
1 tub (8 ounces) whipped topping (eg,Cool Whip) or freshly whipped cream
1 cup crushed toffee bits (eg, Heath or Skor bars)
Optional: Drizzle of hot fudge or chocolate syrup
Optional Additions
Fresh fruit (eg, sliced strawberries or raspberries)
Chopped nuts (eg, pecans or walnuts)
Shredded coconut for texture
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cake Base
Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix package.
Grease and lightly flour a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
Prepare the chocolate cake batter according to the package instructions (combine cake mix with eggs, oil, and water).
Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake as directed on the package. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center—it should come out clean.
Once baked, let the cake cool for 10-15 minutes.
Step 2: Create the Gooey Filling
Using the handle of a wooden spoon or a skewer, poke holes evenly across the surface of the warm cake. Make sure the holes are deep enough for the filling to see in.
Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the cake, allowing it to soak into the holes.
Next, drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the entire cake, ensuring it fills the holes and coats the surface.
Step 3: Add the Toppings
Let the cake cool completely to room temperature.
Spread the whipped topping evenly over the cake’s surface.
Sprinkle the crushed toffee bits generously on top of the whipped topping.
Optional: Drizzle hot fudge or chocolate syrup over the toffee bits for added indulgence.
Step 4: Chill and Serve
Refrigerate the cake for at least 1-2 hours before serving. Chilling helps the flavors meld together and secures clean slices.
Slice and serve directly from the pan, or transfer to a serving platter for a more polished presentation.
Optional: Garnish with fresh fruit, nuts, or a pinch of sea salt for a personalized touch.
